Top Pet Upgrades For Your Custom Home
A recent article by CNBC found that “millennial-age Americans are prioritizing their furry best friends over nuptials or babies when it comes to house hunting.” And it’s not just millennials who are house hunting with their pets in mind! We’ve had more and more families ask us about special features for their furry loved ones as they work through the design features of their new homes.
What Are Our Design Clients Asking For?
- Hidden Trash Bins/Compartments
Keeping the trash can hidden, especially with dogs, is a must. No more having pets get into hazardous chemicals from different cleaning solutions or regular “people food” that won’t agree with your dog’s stomach.
- Pet Doors/Entrances
Whether it’s built into the door itself, or a smaller “pet-size” door next to the human’s, these special entrances for your indoor/outdoor pets are a definite bonus for pet owners!
- Pet-Safe Landscaping Or A Pet Run
It’s fun to take a completely bare yard and transform it into something breathtaking for all the neighbors to be jealous of, but we’ve noticed a trend with our design clients of wanting pet-safe landscaping. In addition, many of our families look to include a pet run in order to have a safe space outside for their pets.
- Custom Inside Doors
Dutch doors in the mudroom can help keep dogs contained or custom “doors” that you use as gates to allow access to certain parts of the home or keep others off limits are a great added feature that can be added to the design process in order to match the style of your home and not be as intrusive as pop-up safety gates.
- A Built-In Crate Area
Including a small alcove (perhaps the space under the stairs?) in the design of a home also offers the chance to make a specialized crate area for animals who sometimes need that quiet area to themselves.
- Durable Flooring
Laminate flooring, stone or ceramic tiles, or painted concrete are much easier to keep clean and stain-free than carpet and absorbent materials.
- Special Spaces For Pets
Whether it’s a special pet “den” for dogs or a special climbing area for cats, animals like to have their own spaces, too.
- Pet Wash Stations
The best idea we’ve seen, especially when it comes to pet dogs, is having a “shower” in the garage (insulated, of course!) or in the laundry/utility room to easily clean your dogs off if they get muddy or stinky after outside time.
- Special Feeding Areas
Like this one that’s built into the kitchen island and have storage for treats and food, while giving animals easy access to food and water bowls. Special upside to this design feature? No tripping over bowls sitting out on the floor or spilling a full water bowl because something hits it!
