Choices, choices, choices!
When you decide to make your own house plans, it’s a wonderful journey filled with self-discovery, hard work, ingenuity and creativity. Our designers work with many new clients by walking them through the process of deciding the type of house they want, the floor plan, the features that are important to them, and then ultimately, deciding to “put it all together” and start building.
What are the first choices our clients make?
What you can afford
There are many online calculators that can help you with this dilemma, but you’ll want to make sure the price range is within your family budget.
Where to build
Because so much of home building comes down to what the lot will look like, it’s important to find the land first. For example, if you have a very narrow lot, a wider house won’t work as well. If you’re on a hill, you’ll probably want more windows facing the back of your home to enjoy the view or perhaps a walk-out basement.
If you’re not sure how to even start with the process, look at our blog post on choosing the perfect plot of land.
The type of house
Once you’ve decided on the plot of land and have an idea of what houses may work on it, then it’s time to choose your floor plan. This can be a tough decision for some families since each style has its own charm. There’s the draw of the traditional two-story home, the space-saving option of the split-level, the timeless option a ranch-style offers or a smaller home that’s perfect for a smaller lot of land. Which floor plan is the right floor plan for you?
When clients are trying to decide which is best for them, we like to ask questions to guide them in their decision-making process:
- Are they planning on staying in the home for many years? If they are, ranches may work the best as they provide mobility options.
- Are there kids or pets to consider?
- Are stairs okay?
- What do they like or dislike about the home they live in now?
When to start
With our program, it takes an average of six to eight months to build a new home. However, there might be some delays.
Using this time frame when do you want to start building? What is your deadline?
How to decorate
Decorating your new home can be one of the most overwhelming parts throughout the construction process! There are so many colors, textures and patterns to choose from people often have to prioritize their decisions in order to start checking things off and get out of analysis-paralysis!
