A wintertime home maintenance checklist!
The early mornings seems to be getting colder and colder as the days pasts, before we know it, the snow will be falling! It’s important to get your home ready for these cold and snowy days in the Midwest. Whether you’re in the process of building your own homestead, have just finishing construction or bought a home, you’ll need to prepare and finish a winter maintenance checklist!
These are the top items that should be on your winter maintenance checklist:
It’s important to keep the cold air out and the warm air inside your home during the chilly months. The first thing to do is check your HVAC system. You’ll want to make sure it’s running efficiently before winter comes. Don’t get stuck in your house without heat during a snowstorm. Once this is done, make sure to change the filter each and every month. You can easily take the old filter out in a matter of seconds.
These are other simple ways to be thinking energy efficient the entire year!
When you build your own homestead, this might not be a necessary step for the first year! However, for years to come it’s important to check the roof! It’s essential to see if there are any missing or loose shingles that could cause water damage when the snow melts. While you’re up there, make sure to check the gutters!
Always be prepared
You always want to make sure you’re prepared for a winter storm, losing electricity and other things that can happen during the winter time. It’s important to always keep at least a gallon of water in your home for a storm. These are the other items you’ll want to keep handy:
- Extra batteries
- Perishable food items
- First aid kits
- Extra blankets, hats, mittens and other winter gear
This will help you get through a day of no electricity! It’s always important to remember this step with checking off your winter maintenance list!
This might seem like the silliest step in your winter maintenance checklist, but it’s an important one. Change all ceiling fans to run clockwise. This helps push the heat down and make the room temperature more comfortable.
A bright entryway
Light the way for those late nights coming home from the office, family function or date night. It’s important to have lights around your entrance of the home, garage and other points of entry. A simple slip in the winter times accounts for over 300,000 serious injuries each year! Don’t miss the holiday parties because of a slip. Check all light bulbs, add new ones and get ground lights to go around the entrance way.
You can enjoy saving money and being warm in your home all at the same time. You can set your thermostat to one temperature for morning, night and when you’re gone. Get chilly? Grab an extra blanket, sweater and fuzzy socks! (An excuse to checkout Target!) The savings could be drastic once you realize the heat doesn’t need to be at 72 degrees Fahrenheit.
These are simple items to check off on your winter maintenance checklist! You can do all of these items yourself and save even more money! Come build your own homestead with us this winter and skip the maintenance this season. Your home could be ready and brand new by Spring time.
