A new house checklist!
The time has come, move in day! Whether you’re bringing your old items or starting fresh, you’ll need some basics inside and outside of the home to get you started. At Homestead Homes, we help you every step of the way, but how much is up to you.
Once you finish building a home yourself, you’ll need to furnish it and make it YOUR home. These are the most common items to add into your home after you finish the building process.
Let there be heat, light and running water
When you’ve been building a home yourself, you often start off with nothing when it comes to electricity, water and sewage and heat. It’s best to call the professionals a week or two beforehand to make sure everything is good to go. You’ll need to pay a security deposit and let them know when these services should be turned on.
Get a shopping list started
Who knows, to save even more money, you might not need anything new! However, if you’re going from an apartment or a small home, to a large home or vice versa you’ll want to make sure you have everything you’ll need. Everything from small to large items needs to be added to this list to ensure you’ve got it all:
- Cleaning supplies
- A vacuum
- New furniture
- Screws, nails and screwdriver
- Outdoor entertainment furniture
- A tool kit
- First aid kits
- Plastic bins to store items
- Trash bags
- Light bulbs
- Toilet paper
- Clean towels and linens
- Pots, pans, silverware, plates and cups
This is a small list of the items you’ll want to make sure you’ve got once you move into your new home. A deck of cards and a board game are always a great idea in case the cable or internet isn’t set up yet.
It’s cold and frigid now, but in a couple of months it’ll be Spring. It’s important to have a lawn mower and weed wacker. Be careful, if you’re putting down new sod after you’re finished building a home yourself, you don’t want to cut it immediately. For the first two weeks, make sure it’s watered properly. Once the grass is over 3.5 inches, you can then cut your grass. You can get a lawnmower on sale now at Home Depot, Lowes and other stores like this. You might even be able to find some on the Facebook market page.
If you plan on having a small or large garden, always get those supplies before the season approaches. Once Spring and Summer are here, items can be more expensive for you to purchase.
The perfect excuse to get rid of the old, stinky couch is now! You’ve been building a home yourself and it’s beautiful, let the decor be beautiful as well! A great place to look is Goodwill and other second-hand shops. You can find antique and brand-new items for much cheaper than a department store find.
Another important piece of furniture often forgotten about is side tables and end stands. You go to sit down and have dinner and realize your furniture isn’t here yet! A nice side table or end stand can easily solve this problem.
This is a small list of items that you will or might need when moving into your new home. Check out this list of over 200 items to add incase you forget just about everything important.
