9 Steps To Creating Your Own Backyard Oasis

Now that you’ve tackled designed a home yourself and are moved into your new Homestead Home, it’s time for those finishing DIY touches that REALLY make it a home. And in the Midwest during springtime, we are all about tackling the tough projects and creating your own backyard oasis. Here are some ideas to get you started with your planning (and planting!).

First thing’s first, clean up.

Take some time to clean up your concrete; power wash the deck or patio and clear out any leftover weeds. This will help you start with a clean palette for envisioning your upcoming inspiration.

Decide on a theme for your oasis.

There are lots of different themes and styles to choose from when it comes to outdoor decor and furniture. Where would you like to “escape to” when you are stepping out onto the patio? Morocco? A vineyard in France? An English garden? Perhaps a Venetian villa?

Choose a color palette that matches your theme or one that makes you fall in love with it.

If you like jewel tones, choose patio furniture and decor in those shades to make you feel at home. If you are going for more of a relaxing spa-like experience, try pastels and tones of neutral greens and blues. If you have decided on a specific theme, make sure your colors complement  that theme.

Think about the kids.

If you have small children, think about devoting part of your backyard oasis to an outdoor playhouse or play area.

Think about the type of entertaining you want to do.

Do you want to host larger gatherings? If so, start thinking about an open outdoor kitchen and lots of space for extra tables and seating.

If you were thinking of making this an outdoor oasis for just your personal use, then smaller seating areas will do just fine.

Think about the shade, too, not just the sun!

Create some shady spots to escape from the heat during the hottest days of summer.

A fire pit isn’t just good for fall and winter.

A good fire pit can be used year round. Certain woods can even repel mosquitoes and other pests during the summer!

An added bonus of having a fire pit? Great opportunities for conversation! We cannot think of a better time with friends than sitting outside on a patio around a firepit, with a great cup of coffee or glass of wine. The conversation just flows!

Consider a water feature.

If you enjoy beach getaways or the sound of running water, consider a water feature in your backyard.

One note we want to leave you with: Your outdoor oasis does not need to be over the top.

While an outdoor oasis is an investment for your home and will help increase its value, it doesn’t need to be over the top extravagant. And, you can always add to it for years to come. If you can afford a new deck or patio one year and a few pieces of furniture the next, you can add to it with some decor and a new firepit.
