5 New Year’s Resolutions For Building Your New Home
It’s that time of year when we start looking back through the past year and making plans for the new year. Are you feeling cramped in the home you’re in? Ready to take the plunge into building your own custom home and building equity in your future?
Here are some resolutions to include in your list then to make the leap a little easier:
Resolution #1 - Make a list of what you want in your dream home.
This is a fun resolution. If you’re building on your own, make a list of everything you want. If you’re working with a significant other or spouse, then sit down together and work through your dream list. Realize you may not get everything, but you can pare down (or negotiate, if you’re working with someone else!) from here.
In addition to thinking about what you want inside the home, think about where you want to live, near to schools or certain areas of town, and what style of home you want.
Resolution #2 - Eliminate some of the extras that “would be nice,” but probably wouldn’t get used regularly.
This one’s a little less fun, but you can also think through areas that you may want to make much nicer (think of marble/granite countertops in the kitchen over having that butler’s pantry, maybe) or a whirlpool tub in the master bathroom as opposed to having a 4th bathroom in the basement.
Resolution #3 - Make sure your financial house is in order.
Do you know what your savings accounts look like? Is your credit in a good place? If not, do you know what steps you need to take to improve it? (If not, our home specialists can help with that!)
Resolution #4 - Figure out your transition process.
This may be as simple as staying where you while building your new home. It may be more complicated, such as selling the home you’re in and renting an apartment for the months in-between your old home and new home. It may involve renting a storage unit for extra belongings; purging your home and getting ready for a move; or figuring out if any new furniture (or other major purchases) will be needed for moving in or if they’ll wait for after moving in.
Resolution #5 - Resolve to meet with one of our New Home Consultants.
Once you have met with your New Home Consultant, you’ll know if you need to pare down your wish list more to fit into your budget; if you’ll be approved by our loan company; or any further steps you need to take before beginning construction.
