4 Questions To Ask Before Building A Home Yourself
Taking on the monumental task of building a home yourself is not a project for the faint-of-heart. Planning out every detail, managing subcontractors, walking through the permit process, and adding all of the finishing touches to make it a real “home” can all take their toll on a person.
So, before you jump into this, what questions should you ask yourself?
What Specific Needs, Features, And Amenities Do I Want Included In My New Home?
While plans can be customized to your specifications, it’s good to have a set idea of different areas of your home.
- How many floors do you want in your new home? Two-story? Split-level? Ranch?
- How many bedrooms do you want? Bathrooms?
- Do you want a finished basement?
- Do you want an eat-in kitchen?
- Do any of the areas of your home need to be accessible for wheelchairs or other mobility devices?
- Do any areas need to be child-proofed?
- Do you want hard flooring, carpet, tile, or some combination of all of these?
Having an idea of the type of home you want will help you narrow down your plan or decide on a custom one, just for you and your family.
Do I Have A Set Timeline Or Deadline In Mind For Construction?
While delays may still happen (and most likely WILL), it’s good to know what your timeline looks like from the beginning. Many of our home construction projects take six to eight months for completion.
How Well Do I Handle Stress?
We are not going to lie here, acting as your own general contractor can be stressful. At Homestead, we give you the tools to manage your project, but certain parts of the process and delays can add stress.
Is This Really Better For Me Than Buying An Existing Home?
Our answer? Yes. We admit, though, that we are a little biased. With a new, custom home, built just for you and your family, you won’t have the headaches of buying an existing home and having to fix up the parts you don’t like.
